Back to Franklin

Prior to 1830
On the northwest corner of Franklin and Market was the Eagle Hotel. Captain James Plater Dennis, a grandson of Judge Jesse Fell, made this hotel his home for many years. He was born 26 March 1812, was one of the founders of the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society, and died 7 November 1887.

Continuing up Franklin beyond the hotel was the home of E. Taylor.

Next was the home of George Chahoon. He came here in 1795, a carpenter, and built St. Stephen's Church in 1823.

Then came Miss Ellsworth's school.

Next was the residence of G. Lord.

Then the residence of J. P. Babb.

Near the corner of Union stood the house of Andrew Beaumont, a three-story frame building. He came to Wilkes-Barre in 1808, at the age of seventeen; attended the old Academy, which had been opened the year before in the old Court House Building, and in 1810 was a teacher there. He was honored with many public offices, and in 1826 succeded Jacob Cist as Postmaster.

In 1840 Colonel Beaumont was appointed Treasurer of the Mint, at Philadelphia, which he refused. In 1813 he married Julia A., daughter of Arnold Colt, who died 13 October 1872. He died 30 September 1853.

Above Market toward Union street on the south side were the Gildersleeve, Bennett, A. Brower, Yarington, S. D. Lewis and M. Pierce houses. (Old Map)
